Unit 1 (C & D) Arts Research: art opportunities and jobs

Despite the fact that our so called government is pulling funding for the arts there are still hundreds of things to do in and around the London area and it really doesn't take much searching to find them.

I suppose I should run this on a personal basis, since that's what I know most about. I'm currently undertaking a BTEC in Art and Design at Croydon college, but along with that I regularly attend workshops at the Victoria and Albert Museum, starting with one that was intended for adults, the ballgowns one that you can find a review of on another part of this blog and have been asked to help out at the Sydenham Arts Festival, the recent pop up theater and at other small arts events.

As far as job opportunities go, I want to apply for an internship with Sands Films Studios, and perhaps with some other costume houses as well. I've heard that some film studios offer work experience opportunities in the costume department for short periods of time to teens and young adults.

I've been considering and re-searching universities for a while now, just slowly. I've come up with three possibilities; Rose Bruford College, Wimbledon University and the London College of Fashion. The London College of fashion is actually holding an open day on March 9th which I'll be attending (I'll also be on the look out for open days for the other uni's I've mentioned as well). Wimbledon is my least favorite though because it explicitly says that the two courses it offers for costume related studies are for either 'costume design' or 'costume interpretation', I'd rather study somewhere that is a little more flexible since I'd like to have a good grasp of both interpretation and design. It'd be wonderful to go to LCF, but Rose Bruford and Wimbledon will be my fallback.

But before I got to uni I'd like to take a year out to work, do internships and travel a bit. I feel like I've not really acquired enough hands on experience in a real world situation, and I'd like to get some of that under my belt before going to university.

My dream career is to work on costumes for movies, preferably historical or fantasy ones since what attracts me most about costume is its powerful ability to remove us from what we know.

  1. WOW, you appear to have a plan. I am impressed that this research is all your own initiative? Have you asked any of your family and friends or online groups if they have useful contacts that could provide more opportunities? Sometimes it is not just what you know but who you know as well.

I have already commented on your Ballgown, very impressive, I've added a link to it here so that anyone else can find it from here - http://silver-artsaward.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page_9.html.

As with so much on this blog, well done and good luck.
